For all the money and hours spent leading up to today, now it's a lot of hurry up and wait.
Joe Worsham is manning Gov. Bob Riley's headquarters on Quintard Avenue by himself today. He said excitement was high among Republican volunteers as Riley visited Anniston Municipal Airport yesterday. But on Election Day, the die is all but cast.
"It's like a ball game, once that pass is out there, you just have to see what happens," he said.
He also said there's not much to do at headquarters today. But he's there to talk with the handful of voters who want to stop by.
Up the road a few blocks, there are at least a few more warm bodies at county Democratic HQ. Roy Hanner, chairman of the Calhoun County Executive Committee, stopped to check in before heading back out to volunteer. State Rep. Barbara Boyd had a handful of volunteers in to make calls and make sure her supporters head to the polls.
Hanner said he hadn't received word on how things looked for the county's Democrats.
"We don't know what the weather will do between now and 7 o'clock tonight," he said. "It's the local races that get affected most by the turnout."
